Casey came to me as a rescue. I learned through a local bird group that there was a baby Cockatiel which had her foot shut in the nest box door (accidentally) until the circulation was cut off. The person who informed me of this could not take in another bird and sent out a plea for help. Help had to be close and had to be able to hand feed. That's where I came in. I had the three requirements for taking the baby: I was willing, close and able to hand feed.
The baby came to me with the better part of his foot and three toes that were black and hanging by a thread with a large knot of infection. The next day I took the bird in to the vet to have the dead part of his foot removed. My oldest daughter immediately took to the baby and we named her Casey after the three legged dog on "Clifford the Big Red Dog".
The antibiotics helped a great deal and the swelling went down. After the tenderness subsided the baby was still not able to perch. She would just sit on the bottom of her cage.
I had been making some toys for my other birds that were climbing nets made in the fashion of a fish net. I got the idea to modify the design to make a hammock for Casey. It was a big hit and the was born. These pictures were taken of Casey right after I put her in it. She seemed so happy to not be on the floor. Casey has since learned to perch, but her is her favorite place. We have since supplied Handi-Hammocks to Max the Macaw that lost the use of her feet to Zinc poisoning, Stubs the Budgie who had one leg bitten off by a larger bird and LC Cockatiel that suffered burns on her feet and has to have them continuously bandaged.
